Background of the Study:
Transnational legal cooperation plays an essential role in combating corruption by harmonizing legal frameworks and facilitating cross-border enforcement of anti-corruption measures. The UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) represents a key international instrument designed to promote transparency, accountability, and integrity in public administration. In Kano State, where corruption has been a persistent challenge, the implementation of UNCAC principles has influenced domestic legal reforms and enforcement practices (Adeyemi, 2023). This study investigates the mechanisms through which international legal cooperation is operationalized to combat corruption. It examines how local authorities in Kano State align with UNCAC provisions, engage in mutual legal assistance, and collaborate with international agencies. The research utilizes case studies, policy analyses, and interviews with law enforcement officials to assess the effectiveness of these cooperative efforts. It further explores the impact of transnational cooperation on reducing corruption levels and improving public trust in governance. The study highlights both the successes and challenges in implementing UNCAC at the local level, providing a comprehensive evaluation of its role in combating corruption (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem:
Despite international efforts and the adoption of UNCAC, corruption remains deeply entrenched in Kano State. Inconsistent enforcement, limited inter-agency collaboration, and resource constraints hinder the effectiveness of transnational legal cooperation (Olu, 2023). This study seeks to identify these challenges and assess how legal cooperation can be enhanced to better combat corruption.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of UNCAC on anti-corruption measures in Kano State.
To identify challenges in transnational legal cooperation against corruption.
To recommend strategies for enhancing international and domestic collaboration.
Research questions:
How effective is the UNCAC in reducing corruption in Kano State?
What are the barriers to effective transnational legal cooperation in this context?
What measures can improve anti-corruption efforts?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into improving transnational legal cooperation against corruption. The findings will inform policymakers and law enforcement agencies on strategies to strengthen legal frameworks and enhance accountability, ultimately contributing to better governance (Johnson, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of terms
